Putting your money in Citibank or Bank of America isn't going to protect you from identity theft today. There is no ironclad method to prevent identity theft today.

Employers are starting to hear about this new law called FACTA, and are starting to be aware that they need to do something. But what should they do?

What FACTA means is that if you, as an individual, lose the information on anyone you have ever hired; or, for any business in the United States of America that collects any personal information on people, if the information should be lost due to not destroying the information properly, then two things can happen. First, there are federal fines of up to $2,500.00, and state fines up to $1,000, per employee, per incident. Second, the business is liable for any damages the individual suffers as the result of a breach of information.

Identity theft is turning into big business.
And not just for the thieves.

Credit bureaus, credit card companies, banks, insurance companies and identity-restoration companies are all offering a line of products with widely varying prices to protect people from identity theft.

The protection programs, which range in the services offered and cost from less than $2 a month to more than $1,000, come at a time when Americans are becoming more aware -- and more nervous -- about the security of their identity information.

Someone recently told me, "You would have to be a stupid to lose your personal information." While I respectfully responded to this person in the moment, the comment has stuck with me. I present on Identity Theft all over the Western United States, and thought I would respond to this particular individual in writing.

NORFOLK — Middle-class merchandise from Target and predictable purchases from Home Depot on one end – and Cadillac, BMW and Lexus cars on the other.

Both ends were allegedly part of the spoils from an identity theft ring that struck more than 20 naval officers assigned to the Norfolk-based carrier George Washington last year.
